Iodine Number vs. Real Performance: Why It Is Not Enough on Its Own
The iodine number is the most common quality metric but it does not guarantee field performance on its own. What it measures, what it misses, and which additional parameters to check.
The iodine number is the most talked-about value in the activated carbon world. It is a cheap, fast and standardized test, so it is the first metric people look at when comparing products. But a high iodine number does not mean high performance in every application.
What Does the Iodine Number Measure?
The iodine molecule is small and mainly enters micropores (below roughly 2 nm). The iodine number therefore reflects the carbon’s adsorption capacity for small molecules. It is a good indicator for small-molecule applications such as chlorine removal.
Why Is It Not Enough on Its Own?
Color pigments, humic acids, large organic molecules (TOC) and many taste-and-odor compounds are larger molecules; their removal depends on meso- and macropores. The iodine number does not reflect these pores. Two carbons with the same iodine number can perform very differently in color removal because their pore distributions differ.
Which Additional Metrics to Check
- Molasses number — removal power for large (color) molecules.
- Methylene blue adsorption — indicator for medium-size molecules.
- BET surface area and pore-size distribution — total and accessible surface.
- Particle size and bulk density — kinetics and dosage.
The most reliable approach is to test the carbon with your own stream. Use the iodine number as a pre-screening criterion and make the final decision with an application-specific adsorption/jar test.
